Caracas, Venezuela. Nelly (Catherine Deneuve) runs away from Vittorio, just after they got engaged. As Vittorio pursues her, she asks a stranger to help her. This stranger is Martin, a French middle-aged man played by Yves Montand. He helps her to escape, drives her to the airport and gives her a plane ticket to Paris. After that, Martin thinks he can return to his lonely life on his island. But what he doesn’t know is that he will meet Nelly again where he would least expect it.
