Le comte de Monte-Cristo

The count of Monte Cristo

Director: Josée Dayan (1998)

In the port of Marseille, Edmond Dantès is unjustly accused of treason on his wedding day with Mercedes, and is sent to Le Château d’If, an island prison. Responsible are his two best friends (Mondego and Danglars) who betrayed him and the prosecutor (Villefort) who framed Dantes to spare the real traitor — Villefort’s own father. In prison, Dantès meets another prisoner, finds out why he was framed, and by whom (Mondego, a cousin of his wife). He decides to take revenge on the people involved in his imprisonment. One night, he is told of a great treasure left on the Island of Monte-Cristo. He escapes after fourteen years, finds the treasure and assumes the title of the Count of Monte-Cristo.

With: Gérard Depardieu, Ornella Muti, Jean Rochefort, Pierre Arditi, Sergio Rubini, Florence Darel, Christopher Thompson, Stanislas Merhar, Julie Depardieu, Hélène Vincent, Michel Aumont, Constanze Engelbrecht.
