The story is set just after the end of the Second World War in 1946 when many Soviet exiles have been tempted back to their mother country by the Soviet government, which promises amnesty to anybody who had left in the past thirty years. Unfortunately, immediately upon arrival, most of those on board the returning ships are either killed or sent to gulags to work. The film centres in partiuclar on Alexei, a doctor, and his wife Marie, who are among those ensnared by the authorities with little chance of escape.
