So that he’ll open up even more, she suggests that he should also write to God. In his letters, Oscar talks about his suffering, worries, joys, falling in love for the first time, time passing by… A singular friendship develops between Oscar and Rose.
Grégoire Canvel has everything going for him. A wife whom he loves, three delightful children, a job that excites him. He’s a film producer. Discovering filmmakers, accompanying films that correspond to his idea of cinema, open and free and close up to life – that’s his reason for living. His vocation. Grégoire finds total fulfillment in his work, to which he dedicates almost all his time and energy. Hyperactive, he never stops, except for weekends, which he spends with his family in the countryside. These interludes are as precious as they are fragile. Grégoire’s confident bearing and charm have won him admirers everywhere. He seems invincible. And yet, his prestigious production company, Moon Films, is unstable. Too many films produced, too many risks taken, too many debts. The dangers become clearer. But Grégoire continues to keep moving forward, no matter the cost. Just where will this headlong rush lead him? One day, he’s obliged to face up to reality. A word hovers: failure. And a deep lassitude, which will soon, secretly, turn into desperation.

With: Chiara Caselli, Louis Do de Lencquesaing , Alice de Lencquesaing, Alice Gautier, Manelle Driss, Éric Elmosnino, Sandrine Dumas, Dominique Frot, Tadjik Djamshed Usmonov, André Marcon, Philippe Paimblanc, Eric Plouvier, Antoine Mathieu

It’s the story of one of those improbable encounters that can change the course of one’s life: the encounter, in a small public garden, between Germain, fifty and barely literate, and Marguerite, a little old lady passionate about reading. Forty years and 220 pounds separate them. One day, purely by chance, Germain sits down beside Marguerite. She’ll go on to read aloud extracts from novels and thereby allow him to discover the magic of books, from which Germain imagined he was excluded for life. Until then, his family circle and drinking buddies took him for an idiot; stupidity will now change places! But Marguerite is losing her sight. For the love of this charming, mischievous and caring grandmother, Germain will teach himself and show her that he’s capable of reading aloud to her when she is no longer able to do so herself.

With: Gérard Depardieu, Gisèle Casadesus, François-Xavier Demaison, Maurane, Patrick Bouchitey, Jean-François Stévenin, Claire Maurier, Sophie Guillemin

Actor Guillaume Canet proved his directing chops and commercial nous with the massively successful thriller Tell No One. There are elements of thriller tension in Little White Lies – not to mention a dazzlingly confident long-take opening shot – but this is an altogether different film, an ensemble drama about a group of long-term friends who get together for a holiday and end up confronting their personal truths and traumas. While Ludo (Jean Dujardin), the biggest bon vivant in the crowd, faces a crisis of his own, the friends head off for their annual holiday at the seaside house of Max (François Cluzet), a successful but hyper-stressed restauranteur. Inevitably, the friends soon come to terms with their own secrets, anxieties and desires, with Max in particular heading for meltdown after being rattled by an intimate confession from his closest friend (Benoît Magimel). Leisurely, classily made and showcasing some fine acting – especially from Cluzet and Marion Cotillard, in a these-days rare French role – Little White Lies is an elegant, entertaining and sometimes engagingly brash variation on the usually more muted genre of the bourgeois lifestyle drama.

With: François Cluzet, Marion Cotillard, Benoît Magimel, Gilles Lellouche, Jean Dujardin, Laurent Lafitte, Valérie Bonneton, Anne Marivin, Louise Monot, Joël Dupuch, Hocine Merabet, Maxim Nucci, Matthieu Chedid, Pierre-Benoist Varoclier

With his jutting cheekbones and merman’s muscles, there is something compelling tinged with violence about him, that look of darkness or pride in his face. A pickpocket on the night train that continues on to Italy, he dreams of getting a gun so that he can grow up like an outlaw. Marie is 14. She’s the little queen of the Bay, skipping back and forth between the teenage riffraff and the young US Navy boys on shore leave. With her little birdlike body reaching toward the promise of a beautiful summer, Marie feels the strength of love inside her. Orso and Marie are loners, wild and proud, both dreaming of a world that is bigger than them. They pass by, ignore, defy, and finally love each other in the dizziness of Angels Bay.

Paris, 1913. Coco Chanel is in love with the young and wealthy Boy Chapel, but she is above all dedicated to her work. Igor Stravinsky rehearses The Rites of Spring. The composition’s revolutionary dissonance bring to mind, in many respects, the clothing designer’s radical work.
Coco goes to the premiere of the The Rite of Spring, dressed in a dazzling white gown, the total opposite of the dreary dresses worn by the Parisian bourgeoisie. Too modern and anti-conformist, the music and the ballet are booed by a crowd on the edge of rioting. Igor is inconsolable.
Seven years later, Coco, despite her success, is devastated by Boy’s death, caused by a car accident. Igor, following the Russian Revolution, is now a penniless refugee in Paris. Sergei Diaghilev, the Ballets Russes’ impresario, organizes an encounter between the pair. They are fascinated by each other. Coco offers to put Igor up in her new villa in Garches. The composer settles in at the beginning of summer, accompanied by his wife Catherine, who has tuberculosis, their four children and a menagerie of birds.

With: Mads Mikkelsen, Anna Mouglalis, Elena Morozova, Natacha Lindinger, Grigori Manoukov, Sophie Hasson, Maxime Danielou, Olivier Claverie, Catherine Davenier, Érick Desmarestz, Anatole Taubman, Nicolas Vaude, Rasha Bukvic, Alexandre Guansé
